The Lord's Supper

There's a special event that takes place a short time before Jesus was crucified on the cross-- it was the Passover meal that Jesus celebrated with his disciples. Many people were celebrating that special meal at the very same time that same day. As a matter of fact, many people celebrated the Passover for more than a thousand years before Jesus was born and for the past two thousand years since Jesus died.
The story of the Passover is found in the book of Exodus (see chapters 12-13) and there are many reminders in the Bible that the Passover should be celebrated to remember how God saved His people from death and destruction. At this meal Jesus was reminding his disciples of God's love and mercy but also pointing them to God's love and mercy that was going to be shown on the cross.
Jesus told his disciples to continue to celebrate this special meal of bread and wine as a way of remembering his broken body and his blood shed for their sin. And churches all across the world continue to remember each week when they celebrate "The Lord's Supper".
When a person comes to faith in Jesus, when a person acknowledges his/her sin and their need for redemption, when they have repented and have asked God for forgiveness, then they are welcome at the communion table.
In the book, The Biggest Story, the story of the Last Supper is told in the chapter "A Meal for the Ages". What a beautiful picture of Jesus gathered together with his disciples. This picture helps us to remember that Jesus promised them and us that he would be with us, even after he left this earth.
So next time communion takes place at church, remember that it is a very special meal that we share. And when you have come to faith in Jesus, you can share it with all the others who are part of God's family too!
